Principal’s Message: 2016 Close of Term 4
As our valued partners in education, we are delighted to celebrate updates on school matters and our students’ learning with you. We like to welcome our new Vice-Principal (Education Officer), Mr Chung Kwok Leong, who joined us on 26 September.
This year, our Sec 1s joined the GESS family and participated in the Sec 1 GESS Camp in 13 – 15 January. In the Camp, and through the many school, level, and class programmes and activities, our Sec 1s were able to adjust quickly to secondary school life and plug into the rhythm and culture of the school. Our Sec 1 and 2 cohorts also participated in and benefited from the Applied Learning Programme (ALP), with around 90% of Sec 2s surveyed indicating that they enjoyed learning about or acquiring new knowledge in science or technology after participating in the GESS ALP. Our Sec 3s were given many opportunities to lead and to serve in organising and carrying out school and CCA programmes and events, under the guidance of their teachers. All Sec 2 – 5 students also participated in their respective GESS Camps in 2 – 4 March where they learnt life skills including resilience, teamwork and leadership.
Your child/ward also participated in school commemorations and celebrations including the visit to the ‘Future of Us’ Exhibition by our Sec 1 and 2 cohorts as part of Total Defence Day commemoration, School Founder’s Day on 11 March, Cross Country Race cum International Friendship Day on 1 April, Sports Fiesta cum Racial Harmony Celebration on 22 July, and National Day Celebration on 8 August. These learning platforms will contribute to the development in your child/ward to be a confident, self-directed learner who is a concerned citizen and an active contributor to society.
We are pleased to inform you that due to the prudent planning and selection of vendors for the Sports Education Programme (SEP) for Sec 1 – 3, we have achieved further savings and will be passing these savings to you through a refund of $7/student into your child’s/ward’s Edusave Account (if it had been paid through his/her Edusave deduction) or into the child’s bank account via GIRO (if it had been paid by cash/cheque).
In the area of academic excellence, our GCE O-level mid-year Mother Tongue Language results released in August were most commendable, including 100% passes and 30% distinctions in Chinese Language, 100% passes and 50% distinctions in Malay Language, and 100% passes and 18% distinctions in Tamil Language, for the Sec 4 Express. Our teachers are continuing their hard work to support all our O-level students in their final preparations for the remaining O-levels written papers.
I like to update you on the forthcoming activities organised by the School (please see overleaf). In particular, you are cordially invited to attend the GESS Open House on 19 November 2016. At the Open House, we hope to help interested parents and students make informed choices through the introduction of the GESS quality curriculum, signature programmes, facilities and school activities. We invite all to bring relatives and friends who are keen to find out more about the GESS brand of education.
I would also like to invite you to join us in our community project to benefit the less fortunate students in our community through the Fairprice Share-a-Textbook Project. The dates of the physical distribution of used textbooks are 10 and 11 Dec 2016 at our school. If you are keen to participate in this worthy project, please contact our teacher-in-charge, Mr Wong Meng Kit at firstname.lastname@example.org.
All students are required to submit their Travel Plan Declaration for the year-end vacation via LMS portal (https://lms.asknlearn.com/gess/) between Thursday, 20 October, 0001hrs and Thursday, 27 October 2016, 2359hrs. The Travel History Declaration must then be made between Tuesday, 20 December, 0001hrs and Friday, 30 December 2016, 0800hrs.
Preparations for 2016
In view of the long duration of the Nov/Dec holidays, we seek your cooperation in ensuring that the hairstyle of your child/ward is appropriate when he/she reports to school on Tuesday, 3 January 2017. Please also ensure that your child’s/ward’s hair is not dyed, coloured or highlighted, and that your child/ward does not wear a uniform that has been modified. Upper secondary boys are reminded to purchase school trousers only from the school-appointed tailor, Bibi&Baba Private Limited. Please be informed that the school takes a very serious view of students who flout the rules pertaining to attire and appearance. By ensuring that all Gessians adhere to the School Rules on Appearance/Attire, our partnership will lead your child/ward towards attaining greater self-discipline. We will be enforcing the standards and expectations very strictly.
Your support is your vote of confidence in our GESS education. If you have any queries or feedback, you may email your child’s/ward’s current form teachers/subject teachers/Assistant Year Head. You may also contact the General Office at 6474 5594. You may also refer to our school website at / for general information like the bookshop and uniform suppliers’ opening hours. We look forward to your continued support as we strive to nurture and develop students to become Gessians of Excellence, Standing and Significance.
