Welcome to Gan Eng Seng School!
To all Sec 1 students and new staff who have joined us this year, a warm welcome to the vibrant Gessian family. To all other students and staff, welcome to 2020 which forms another milestone in the historical journey that the school has taken. This year, our school celebrates its 135th anniversary, honouring its mission to nurture the best in each student and strive ever onward while building on its heritage and legacy left behind by our founder, Mr Gan Eng Seng.
We draw students from a wide cross-section of society, many coming from humble homes. Our simple motto ‘Onward!’ instils the value of resilience and inspires our students to look forward and pursue their dreams. Despite the odds and challenges, many Gessians have succeeded and have made us proud both on the international stage and at the national level. The school has also done well in nurturing generations of Gessians who are love embodied, taking pride in being of service to others.
This year, we are proud to be one of the secondary schools in Singapore that is piloting Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB). Our Sec 1 students are the pioneer batch of Gessians who are in mixed-stream form classes. These students are in an environment where social mixing and inclusivity are strengthened and individuals are valued for who they are. FSBB seeks to grow every student’s gifts and talents. Humanities subjects such as Literature and Geography are offered to our Sec 2NA and 2NT students at a higher level if they do well and meet the criteria at the end of Sec 1. This is indeed an exciting time for GESS as we embrace the changes in the national educational landscape.
On behalf of the staff and students of GESS, I would like to thank Mdm Jenny Tan, the former principal of the school, for her strong leadership and belief in holistic education and character excellence. Our appreciation also goes to our key partners- the School Advisory Committee, Gan Eng Seng Old Students’ Association, Parent-Teacher Association, parents and guardians for their unwavering support and belief in the Gessian brand of education.
A well-loved sentence in our School Creed reads, ‘Let us remember that as many hands build a house, so many hearts make a school’. Together, we can ride the wave of change and reach even greater heights!
