Principal’s Message: 2016 Term 2 Updates

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We would like to update you on the key events that have taken place and give you an overview of events in Term 3.

On 11 March, the school celebrated its 131st anniversary with our students going into the community to raise awareness of kidney diseases and its prevention, in collaboration with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). In the afternoon, Mr Koh Poh Tiong, chairman and senior advisor of Ezra Holdings and non-executive chairman of Times Publishing, and also a senior Gessian, graced the Speech and Prize Giving Ceremony. Our students benefited from the advice of Mr Koh to build a strong and resilient character, and from the joy of reaching out to the public with the message of taking good care of their health.

With the strong support of our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), our school had the Cross Country Race cum International Friendship Day Commemoration at the Singapore Chinese Garden on 1 April. Many parents came to support the event through their participation in the races, and provided refreshments for all the participants. We thank the PTA for their continual support.

We celebrate another bountiful year of accomplishments in CCA which has made us proud. All six of our Uniformed Group CCAs have attained Gold Award again. Our Canoeing Sprint Team came in Top 6 in all B and C Divisions (Boys and Girls) at the National Inter-schools Canoeing Championship, and our Table Tennis Girls achieved 2nd position and also Top 8 in the South Zone and National Inter-schools Championships respectively.

Aesthetics Week, Post Exam Activities, and Parent-Teacher Conference
As the Term comes to a close, our students will be participating in a host of activities from 24 – 26 May to enhance their appreciation of Aesthetics, as well as to provide opportunities for some to showcase their talents during the Aesthetics Week.

On 26 May, all students will also take part in activities involving their class teachers and peers that will further build class spirit and camaraderie. Please note that the school will be dismissed at 1pm.

On 27 May, only selected students identified to attend the Parent-Teacher Conference will need to attend the session with their parents. The form teachers would have informed the parents of these identified students.

Installation of “No Right Turn” Sign Outside Main Exit of School
On an average school day, the school observes that about 200 vehicles drive into and out of the school during the morning peak period between 7am – 7.25am. We have observed a few near-accidents between vehicles when some turned right to exit through Alexandra Road. This also often leads to a bottleneck in our school, with the exiting vehicles waiting to turn right while the other vehicles inside the school wait to turn left. After consultations with the LTA, a “NO Right Turn” sign would be installed outside the main exit of the school gate to restrict vehicles exiting the school to turn left only (during 7am – 7.25am). The installation is expected to be completed and operational by early Term 3. We believe this will lead to a safer and smoother traffic flow into and out of school, and seek your cooperation to ensure safety for all.

Direct School Admission (DSA) Application
The DSA applications to Gan Eng Seng School for the Year 2016 are now open from 9 May – 1 Jul. This year, we will be considering applicants for one of two distinctive programmes in GESS: Applied Learning Programme (Interdisciplinary) and Learning for Life Programme (Community and Youth Leadership). Interested parents of the current Primary 6 cohort will find relevant information for the DSA in our school website at /school-information/school-admission/. We hope that our parents will continue to be our best ambassadors for the school, by encouraging prospective candidates to select GESS as their school of choice.

We like to bring to your attention the dates of the following key events of the school in Term 3 (see Annex). The CCA Schedule during the June Holidays is available for your reference in our school website at: /announcement/2016-june-cca-training-schedule/.
