Principal’s Message: 2019 Term 1 Welcome
Happy New Year!
On behalf of staff and students of the school, I would like to extend a warm welcome to parents/guardians whose children have just joined our school. We aim to nurture Gessians of Excellence, Standing and Significance, hence, we continue to enhance our curricular and co curricular programmes. As the year progresses, Gessians will be involved in enriching and exciting activities/programmes that include Camps, ViA activities and Learning Fortnight. We look forward to your continued support so that every Gessian can have a positive schooling experience.
Welcome and Farewell
We would like to welcome into the Gessian family the following new staff: Ms Jacqueline Chen, Mr Rathinavelu Vengadesan, Ms Miriam Ngo (CSO) and Mdm Hanitah Bte Musa (AE).
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our staff who have left the school for their invaluable contributions: Mr Sandhu, Ms Wu Mei Hui, Mr Teng Jun Yuan, Mr Chong Zi Yi, Mr Victor Tan, Ms Heather Chow (AED), Ms Lisa Yoanna Astan (AED), Mr Lee Wai Munn (AE) and Ms Azlinda Binte Bazid (CSO). Mr Teo Soon Hee, who has served the school faithfully for many years, has retired. We wish him all the best.
GCE ‘N’ level Results 2018
We are pleased to announce that our Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) students performed very well in the GCE ‘N’ level examination 2018. 86.5% of our 4NA students are eligible for Sec 5NA and 83.8% qualify for the Direct-Entry-Scheme to Polytechnic programme (OPP). 7 NA students obtained ELMAB3 of 10 points or less, with 5 from this group obtaining an ‘Excellent’ for their CCAs too. We are also happy to announce that 100% of our Sec 4NT students are eligible for entry to ITE. 11 NT students have obtained at least 2 As, with 6 students obtaining an ‘Excellent’ and 4 obtaining a ‘Good’ for their CCAs. Dallas Yap from 4NT deserves special commendation as he has qualified for lateral transfer to the 4NA curriculum.
Our students’ commendable performance in the GCE ‘N’ level examination is an affirmation of the good work of our partners, namely the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Alumni (GESSOSA), the School Advisory Committee and parents/guardians who worked to bring out the best in our students. Special thanks go to all teachers (lower and upper Sec) who have taught this cohort of students, for their constant guidance and support. Gessians not only excel in studies; they also do well in non-academic areas. 5 students in our 2018 Sec 4 Normal graduating cohort received the MOE Edusave CHaracter Award (ECHA) for good character.
The school has reviewed and made changes to its School-Based Assessment Policy to align its assessment practices to the new MOE Assessment policy. Parents/guardians, kindly take note that there will be no mid-year examination for Sec 1 and there are no common tests for all levels. Weighted Assessments (WA) are carried outthroughout the year and the intent of WA is both formative and summative. While they assess your child’s/ward’s proficiency in the subjects, they also provide teachers with information on the learning gaps they need to address. Hence, we seek your active partnership in ensuring that your child/ward·doeshis/her best in every assessment. Please see below for details on GESS Assessment Weighting Distribution for the respective levels:

Communication with Parents/Guardians Through Parents Gateway
By now, you should have received a letter on Parents Gateway and step- by- step instructions on onboarding. The school would encourage all parents to download the free mobile app on their mobile phones as this app allows parents to engage closely with the school, receive information and perform a range of administrative functions including giving consent for school activities, programmes and trips. From February 2019, parents who are onboard Parents Gateway will receive information via the mobile app. We will continue to issue hardcopies to parents who are unable to come onboard.
Should you have any questions, please contact Siti Zuraidah Kamis (SH/ICT) at siti zuraidah firstname.lastname@example.org.
