Principal’s Message: 2016 Term 1 Updates
Thank you for partnership in the first 10 weeks of the new Academic Year 2016. Your child/ward has spent 10 exciting weeks in school and it’s my pleasure to update you on the key events that have taken place and give you an overview of events that would be taking place in Term 2.
Sec 1 GESS Camp and MBTI Workshop (13 – 15 Jan 2016)
Our Sec 1 cohort bonded with each other and was inducted into the GESS culture in their very first 3D1N residential camp. Through the camp, they also obtained a glimpse of how their student leaders model the school vision of a Gessian of Excellence, Standing and Significance. We believe that some among the Sec 1s will aspire to be a student leader one day to inspire others also. Our Sec 2 cohort learnt to better manage themselves and interact with others at the MBTI Workshop. They will learn additional study strategies leveraging on their unique MBTI Type profile in Term 2.
Educational and Career Guidance (ECG) Week (25 – 28 Jan 2016)
Our students attended a series of career talks during the 2016 Education & Career Guidance (ECG) Week. To meet the different needs and aspirations of all students, we invited professionals from different industries to share about the required skills, attitudes, and challenges faced in their professions. We believe these presentations have opened up new possibilities and opportunities for our students as they continue to discover their passion and strengths.
Commemoration of Total Defence Day (15 – 17 Feb 2016)
The School organised two key events to support this year’s theme for Total Defence – “Together we keep Singapore strong”. Our Sec 2 and 3 students attended the ‘Future of Us’ exhibition, an immersive and multi-sensory experience that provided our students a glimpse into the possibilities of how Singaporeans can live, work, play, care and learn in the future. Through the experience, our students reflected on how they may be active contributors in designing the future of our nation, and contributed their aspirations and hopes for Singapore.
All our students participated in the DARE (Dispatcher-Assisted first REsponder) programme to learn practical skills on how to be an effective first-responder when they witness someone suffering from cardiac arrest. They learnt how to provide CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) during such an emergency.
Our St John Ambulance Brigade also conducted basic first aid training for the Primary Three students of Alexandra Primary School, to raise awareness amongst the nine year olds of the importance of first aid in saving lives.
Founder’s Day cum Prize Giving Ceremony 2016
On 11 Mar 2016, the school will be celebrating its 131st year of its founding. In the morning, the entire school will move into the community to raise awareness of kidney disease and prevention, and each student will strive to persuade five members of the public to pen words of encouragement on postcards to kidney patients. The school will gather all completed cards to be sent to the various NKF dialysis centres to encourage the kidney patients. In the afternoon, the Speech and Prize Giving Ceremony will be held in the Hall, with our performing arts CCA showcasing their accomplishments at the event.
