Principal’s Message: Close Of Term 4 2015
23 Oct 2015
As the school academic year 2015 comes to a close, we are delighted to celebrate the learning of our students with you, our valued partners in education.
This year, the school launched its second distinctive programme – GESS Probes* Programme – an applied learning programme to develop students’ skills in transdisciplinarity, novel and adaptive thinking, and design thinking. In close partnership with STEM Inc, a unit of the Singapore Science Centre, the school designed the programme to develop students’ interests, knowledge and skills in science, mathematics and technology to solve real-world problems. Our entire Sec 1 cohort attended the first year of this programme and we have received very positive feedback from the participants. This programme has enabled our students to explore future career opportunities in design, science and engineering.
Our Sec 2 students participated in a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) workshop under the GESS LIFE Programme (GESS’s first distinctive programme launched in July 2014) to help them develop their self-knowledge and leverage this knowledge for personal growth and development. Students who participated in the workshop have given feedback on how they have found useful applications in their daily lives. An introductory workshop was also conducted for parents to further reinforce the ideas learnt. As a result of strong positive feedback received from the parent participants, we will be conducting a similar workshop for parents sometime in Jan/Feb 2016. Do look out for the workshop details next year.
Our Sec 3 students completed their overseas learning journey in March and have laid the foundations in preparation for their national examinations in the following year. Students who have not done well are advised to use this holiday to strengthen their foundations in the various subjects, with our teachers’ support and guidance.
This year, our school also celebrated its 130th year anniversary beginning with the Founder’s Day in March, a blood donation drive in partnership with the Singapore Blood Bank in April, a special publication titled “GESS Spirit”, and the Time Capsule Ceremony in September. Ms Ho Peng, former Director-General of Education (2009 – 2015) graced the Ceremony. She was Principal of Gan Eng Seng School from 1994 – 1997. She was one of the 13 contributors of artefacts that were put into the Time Capsule. This will be opened on the Founder’s Day in the year 2035.
I like to update you on the forthcoming activities organised by the School (please see overleaf). In particular, you are cordially invited to attend the GESS Open House on 21 November 2015. At the Open House, we hope to help interested parents and students make informed choices through the introduction of the GESS quality curriculum, signature programmes, facilities and school activities. We invite all to bring relatives and friends who are keen to find out more about the GESS brand of education.
All students are required to submit their Travel Plan Declaration for the year-end vacation via LMS portal (http://lms.asknlearn.com/gess/) between Thursday, 22 Oct, 0001hrs and Thursday, 29 Oct, 2359hrs. The Travel History Declaration must then be made between Friday, 18 Dec, 0001hrs and Monday, 28 Dec, 0800hrs.
Preparations for 2016
In view of the long duration of the Nov/Dec holidays, we seek your cooperation in ensuring that the hairstyle of your child/ward is appropriate when he/she reports to school on Monday, 4 Jan 2016. Please also ensure that your child’s/ward’s hair is not dyed, coloured or highlighted; and that your child/ward does not wear a uniform that has been modified. Upper secondary boys are reminded to purchase school trousers only from the school-appointed tailor, Bibi&Baba Private Limited. Please be informed that the school takes a very serious view of students who flout the rules pertaining to attire and appearance. By ensuring that all Gessians adhere to the School Rules on Appearance/Attire, our partnership will lead your child/ward towards attaining greater self-discipline. We will be enforcing the standards and expectations very strictly.
Your support is your vote of confidence in our GESS education. If you have any queries or feedback, you may email your child’s/ward’s current form teachers/subject teachers/Assistant Year Head. You may also contact the General Office at
6474 5594. You may also refer to our school website at / for general information like the bookshop and uniform suppliers’ opening hours. We look forward to your continued support as we strive to nurture and develop students to become Gessians of Excellence, Standing and Significance.
